Regulating bio-safety guidelines
Scientists are able to change characteristics of existing organisms by introducing genes from other species, thanks to the progress made in genetic engineering. Pakistan's major agricultural crop being cotton, contributing one-third to export earnings, it is necessary to have biotechnological methods in agriculture. Organizations like WHO, United Nations, OECD are working on setting global standards for biotechnology. Codex is also developing principles to analyze risk of biotechnological products on health of humans. Other WTO countries have modified regulations to suit their needers.
