Call for using biotech for livestock boost
At a meeting with scientists from National Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering, held at Faisalabad, Professor Manzoor Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of the Lahore University expressed the need for the livestock segment to embrace biotechnology. The delegates agreed upon jointly conducting a 5 day-training program regarding usage of biotechnology to enhance productivity in the livestock sector. The Vice-Chancellor also gave the attendees a brief on the University’s research initiative for development of the livestock sector and the alliances it has made with Indian and global institutions.

Need stressed to cultivate bio-tech cotton varieties
In a seminar held at Ayub Agricultural Research Institute in Faisalabad, Dr Rafique Chaudhry, Internal Cotton Advisory Committee, said that Pakistan needs to improve the quality of cotton production. He stressed that global cotton production has been increasing with the advances in biotechnology and Pakistan must focus on developing different types of Bt cotton. Farmers must be encouraged to cultivate biotech varieties of cotton. Scientists from Ayub Agricultural Research Institute, National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering and University of Agriculture were the important members of this seminar.
